Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, so she was fostered by her mother grandma and godparents. As a child Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford began to be fascinated by acting at the age of teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she realized that Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place suitable for her. Ford was then able to apply for a place in the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford didn't complete her degree until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such TV shows such including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
